A makeover project for a homeless hostel has harnessed the power of its residents by teaching them decorating and DIY to spruce the place up, using curtains and decorating to create a comfortable lounge for themselves.

Hostel makeover project 'a success' In a bid to improve the skills of homeless people under its roof, a hostel has worked together with its residents to redecorate the main room of their accommodation.

The Dunedin Harbour Hostel hopes that through its interior design scheme Fab Pad, it is able to give its TV room a spruce up while re-equipping its tenants with real-life experience to take away with them when they get fixed up, the Scotsman reported.

Curtains were one of the orders of the day, being fitted to the room while other miniature workshops were used to pass on skills in painting, sewing and designing.

Shelter, the leading charity concerned with homelessness, was founded on the back of Cathy Come Home, a documentary highlighting such problems, with the organisation currently highlighting the issues surrounding the modern housing crisis.
