'Check thread count' before investing in bed linen
Published: 21 April 2010
Percale and sateen are words to look out for when buying bed linen, it has been said.
People looking for luxury bed linen should do a bit of preparation before splashing their cash to get the best results, according to expert advice.Speaking to Washington-based news station WTOP, Consumer Reports textile engineer Pat Slaven said that when shopping for bed linen, it is imperative to look for words like sateen and percale, which refer to the weave of the sheets.
"For percale sheets, you'll see lower counts. Wonderful sheets. They don't need as many yarns for the weave structure," she went on to say.
"We see sateen sheets in the higher numbers. Still, around 400 is going to give you a very serviceable sheet."
The expert also advised measuring everything on a bed before investing in a duvet set, including the mattress and topper, before adding an inch or two to account for sheet shrinkage.
Earlier this month, the Guardian reported that Cornwall's Bodrifty Farm offers holidaymakers Iron Age-style roundhouses for camping, which also feature four-poster beds complete with Egyptian cotton sheets.
