Bedding on a budget: How to keep bed linen clean at a low cost and retain beautiful duvet sets and bed throws.
Britons wanting to achieve the status of domestic goddess on a budget can make some savings in the way they wash their bed linen, it is claimed.Cleaning expert Aggie MacKenzie makes her comments to the Mirror, noting the credit crunch makes many cleaning products simply too expensive.
One tip, useful for cleaning both bedding and shirts, is that milk can often work as an effective stain remover, while being considerably cheaper than shop-bought products, she explains.
Furthermore, people should hang their duvet sets out to dry, rather than tumble drying them, Aggie argues.
It is not practical, however, to try and clean bedding on a low-temperature wash, she continues.
"Lower temperatures wont kill off all the bacteria, dust mites and bed bugs which can aggravate asthma and cause skin irritations. So ensure you use the 60-degree wash to do your bed linen," the cleaning expert concludes.
Online home-making resource iVillage suggests adding lemon juice to the wash when laundering white sheets as this is less harmful than bleach.
