Crib mattresses have 'three priorities'
Published: 11 August 2009
Parents must be careful when choosing bedding for their young ones, according to a new report, as it is often one of the most difficult calls to make as a mother or father.
Three factors must come into play when a parent is choosing bedding for their young one, it has been asserted.Speaking to the Chicago Tribune, Sonya Lunder, a senior analyst for the Environmental Working Group, explained that it's important in ensuring that young children get the good sleep they need on a night.
The expert first noted that parents should not invest in anything coated with vinyl for water resistance as many professionals believe the PVC in it can create an increased chance of asthma in later life.
On top of that, Ms Lunder said that bedding must be flame retardant, even if their baby's not started on the cigarettes during its use.
And while organic offerings are nice enough, parents should not worry about buying them straight away if they are more expensive - they should just avoid buying foam as it is usually full of chemicals, Ms Lunder added.
Crib mattresses ought to be firm as babies are unable to move themselves around or support their breathing, Heather Corley of About.com stated this week.
