Deerest love may have to leave Canadian bedding behind
Published: 14 August 2009
A local government department in Canada is planning to split up a five-year-old deer and its doting keeper.Janet Schwartz, a 67-year-old British Columbian who lives near the western border with the US, took in the deer after she found it stood next to its dead mother several years ago.
Shortly afterwards, the animal took so well to Janet that even bedding was shared, with the deer taking a huge shine to Janet's bed linen within weeks.
Ms Schwartz said of their special relationship: "She's like a real baby. She cuddles up to me all the time, eats the same food I eat, stays in my house and sleeps in my bed at night.
She also noted her love of music and added: "She loves to dance. She loves Elvis Presley. I put Elvis Presley on and she'll dance. Her back end will sway."
Despite this, the environmental department of British Columbia would like to rehabilitate the deer back into the real world, causing worry for Janet.
South Africa's Shirley and Tonie Joubert were featured this summer on the BBC after it was found that Jessica, a hippo from a local waterhole, gets her own bed at their home.
