Russian government invests in obscenely expensive bed
Published: 21 August 2009
Russians have a lot of style and money when it comes to their beds, evidently; you only have to see the investment by the government to realise just how much they're willing to plough into their bedding!
The Russian government, which has seen its economy shrink by 10.9 per cent in the last quarter, decided to fight back with some audacious spending and invest in a gold-plated bed.A bed worth well over £450,000 - a king-sized cherry wood offering, no less - has been covered in 24-carat gold, justified as a purchase by officials in that it will save on hotel bills for foreign dignitaries who visit the huge, cold country in the east.
The foreign ministry is putting it inside a specially-created guest house which it believes will satisfy all needs and safety requirements, though the bed no doubt has the most luxurious bed linen - perhaps organic or Egyptian cotton.
Yesterday, the crew and suspected hijackers of the Arctic Sea - a cargo ship escorted by the Russian navy in another issue involving the foreign ministry - arrived in the country for questioning, closing down one of the biggest situations of its kind in a number of years.
