Sleep apnoea 'may be down to sleeping position'
Published: 27 August 2009
The importance of being comfortable in bed and with good bedding may have been highlighted by a new report looking into a sleeping disorder, which necessitates a good sleeping position to stay on top of it.
The effects of sleep apnoea - a major condition affecting thousands in the UK - must be addressed with a healthy lifestyle, according to a new report by US News.Sleep apnoea causes the airways to collapse when people are under their duvet covers each night, resulting in a poorer quality of rest as well as other more serious factors, such as a lowered life expectancy, according to US News.
The effects of the condition are exacerbated by sleeping on the back, while sleeping on the side of the body will help cut down on things, which may be made easier for back-sleepers should they invest in memory foam bedding or even Egyptian cotton to make it as comfortable as possible.
Weight gain was named as the first major risk factor in sleep apnoea, as are alcohol and cigarettes which relax muscles and irritate the upper airway respectively.
This week, director of the British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Association Marianne J Davey recommended that many individuals may be sleep apnoea sufferers and should consult their doctor if their partner picks up on snoring or pauses in breathing overnight.
