Getting seven hours rest is crucial to ensuring heart health, research shows.

7 hours sleep 'the key to heart health' Sleeping for exactly seven hours can have a positive impact on the health of the heart, it has been suggested.

Researchers at the University School of Medicine in West Virginia discovered that getting any more or less sleep than this can increase the likelihood of suffering a heart attack or stroke.

Lead researcher Anoop Shankar commented: "Sleep disturbances may be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease - even among subjects who are apparently healthy."

He emphasised that people who struggle with their sleep patterns really should discuss their problems with a health professional to avoid such problems.

This follows research published in the journal Sleep, which indicated that having a sufficient lie-in at the weekend can help offset tiredness from throughout the week.

Failure to get sufficient sleep can have a negative impact on alertness, it warned.
