Are your friends as good as your duvet cover?
Published: 19 August 2010
Being in close proximity to friends is like being under the duvet cover, Dutch researchers claim.
Likening friends to a duvet cover is perhaps not a common comparison, but one team of researchers believe to have found a link between the two.Scientists at the VU University in Amsterdam discovered that being close to a friend emulates the feeling of warmth associated with being in bed.
In the majority of cases, people feel around 2 degrees C warmer with someone they are particularly fond of than with an individual they do not like as much.
Commenting on the findings, study leader Hans Ijzerman said: "The theory is that the way we perceive relationships is affected by very basic factors.
"We are now looking at whether social and emotional closeness make a difference to body temperature."
It was revealed earlier this week by budget hotel chain Travelodge that adults are still sharing their beds with cuddly toys.
Findings also showed that many businessmen even take their teddies away on trips with them.
