Instil a sense of calm before kids go to bed
Published: 05 August 2010
Making sure the house is calm before a child goes to bed is highly important.
Carrying out a calming bedtime ritual can help kids sleep better, it has been claimed.Douglas M Teti, a professor of human development, psychology and pediatrics at Pennsylvania State University, said that being stressed is unlikely to help anyone.
"Try to be sensitive and warm. What's the alternative? To lose your temper? I don't see that helping anything," he explained to the Washington Post.
Any number of things can help children relax before bed, he suggested, such as reading a bedtime story or making sure they have a warm bath.
Even playing soothing music or having a cuddle can make youngsters feel at ease before they get under the duvet cover, Professor Teti revealed.
Melissa Dutton recently said in an article for the Associated Press that televisions should be removed from children's bedrooms to ensure they get a good night's sleep and are not tempted to stay up.
