Is your body clock set to the right time?
Published: 18 August 2010
Sleeplessness may be caused by problems with a person's body clock.
Problems with sleeplessness may be triggered by delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS), as one sufferer realised after many years of struggling to sleep.Speaking to the Daily Mail, Jo Carlowe revealed that it was not sleeping itself that was the problem, but rather the time at which she dozed off.
After much research - and years of thinking she was the only one with the issue - she was diagnosed as having DSPS, which is fundamentally a flaw in the body clock.
Professor Jim Horne, director of the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University, explained: "They will most likely misdiagnose the condition as insomnia - or depression without realising the real cause.
"As a result, patients are often prescribed sleeping pills or anti-depressants - neither of which help."
This follows results from an American study that showed some people are naturally able to block out noise more effectively than others, meaning they sleep better.
