Sleepiness is a growing problem among British motorists, research shows.

Lack of sleep plagues British motorists Sleeplessness is causing problems on British roads, a new survey from Brake and Direct Line has revealed.

The survey found three-quarters (74 per cent) of motorists have driven while tired at some point over the past year.

When the study was conducted just six years ago, 46 per cent of drivers admitted to driving while excessively tired.

Andy Goldby, director of motor pricing and underwriting at Direct Line, said: "Drivers know when they are tired, and whilst they may think stopping for a break may increase their journey time, it's not worth the risk to themselves, their passengers or other road users."

The groups advised people to stop regularly on long journeys and take a nap if necessary. Caffeine can help improve alertness for short periods of time, they added.

Brake is holding Road Safety Week in November, with this year's focus being on motorists slowing down to avoid accidents involving children.
