Quality, not quantity of sleep 'an issue for mothers'
Published: 31 August 2010
Mothers often miss out on quality sleep during the first four months of their child's life.
The first four months after giving birth are often the most difficult for new mums, it has been suggested. However, despite popular belief, scientists from the West Virginia University in Morgantown revealed that it is not the amount of sleep they get that is the problem.
Instead, it is the quality of their sleep that leads to tiredness, not least because they are woken up several times throughout the night.
In fact, the researchers found that women generally got the recommended seven hours sleep a night, but very rarely without interruption.
In recent days, budget hotel chain Travelodge revealed it is to hold a Classical Siesta to help sleep deprived Britons rejuvenate and catch up on some much needed sleep.
Previous events had proved a success, so the company is hoping to roll out similar schemes across its hotel network all over the UK.
