Lack of sleep causes excess urination in children, study finds.

Night-time urination is linked to poor sleep in children Children who find they need to go to the toilet several times during the night could be deprived of sleep.

A Danish study found that a lack of sleep causes healthy children between the ages of eight and 12 to urinate more frequently, with an average increase of 68 per cent.

Sleep deprivation also causes preadolescencents to excrete more sodium, have altered regulation of hormones controlling excretion and to have higher blood pressure rates.

To solve the problem, it is important to address the reasons why a child may not be sleeping, in addition to the symptoms of excessive urination.

The study states: "The close relationship between the regulation of the sleep-wake cycle, blood pressure, and nocturnal urine output points toward sleep induction or blood pressure lowering treatment as possible new concepts in enuresis [bed-wetting] research and treatment."

One way to ensure that your child is getting enough sleep is to make the bedroom a place that they want to be, but simultaneously an area in which they can relax.

Getting children involved in choosing their bedding may be one way to do this, so they feel like they have control over the space.
