Study: Sleep apnoea worsens with weight gain
Published: 17th August 2010
Sleep apnoea symptoms worsen in people who continue to put on weight, a study shows.
A link has been discovered by Australian researchers between the presence of sleep apnoea and obesity.
After looking over 20 years of sleep patients' records from a specialist facility, the researchers found that the sleep disorder became worse as people gain weight.
The results have been published in the Medical Journal of Australia and show a direct correlation between the two health issues.
Dr Jeffrey Pretto, who was involved in the study, explained: "We found that the average male that we did a sleep study on put on about 10kg, and the average female about 12kg."
These findings are released as scientists at the University School of Medicine in West Virginia found that getting seven hours of sleep a night will help contribute to good heart health.
They discovered that frequently getting more or less than this amount can have a number of health implications.
