Beds 'must be as comfortable as possible'

People need to put more stock in the benefits which sleep can give them, which will likely mean spending a little bit of money on high-quality bedding to improve the feel of sleep, one expert believes.

Beds 'must be as comfortable as possible' The importance of sleep has been known to be massively understated by a number of people, with one expert asserting that a little bit of money can go a long way to improving the comfort levels of a mattress.

Jessica Alexander, a press officer for the Sleep Council, responded to research from Brigham and Women's Hospital in the US, which found that chronic sleep loss over three weeks caused performance to deteriorate at a much quicker rate for each consecutive hour spent awake.

Underlining the importance of good bed linen and relaxing bedding, she said: "Uncomfortable beds; not enough fresh air and exercise, a poor diet, too much caffeine, smoking, no wind down routine, bedrooms which are too stuffy and an addiction to modern day 24 hour gadgetry all contribute to poor quality sleep."

All of these could be easily corrected by people if they truly appreciated the damage they are doing to themselves by not getting rest, she added.
