London pod hotel to demonstrate different approach to bedding
Published: 14 January 2010
People bedding down in London will have the chance to visit the upcoming pod hotel in Trocadero, with the new facility approaching bed linen and mattresses in an entirely novel way for the UK.
The application to build a Japanese-style pod hotel between the second and seventh floors in a Grade II-listed Trocadero building in Piccadilly Circus has been accepted by Westminster Council.Tiny windowless bed spaces embracing minimalistic bedding, mattresses and bed linen will come to the city for the first time under the proposals, which chairman of Westminster Council's Planning and City Development Committee Alastair Moss said is very much welcome in the West End.
He said that smaller, refined designs are creeping into all desired possessions, such as the iPod nano and plenty of mobile phones, adding that Westminster will be "in vogue" with this new addition.
Mr Moss concluded: "The designs for this hotel are a good example that bigger does not equal better, and take into account that when people come to central London with its vast array of attractions and things to do they do not always need or want a large room."
Pod hotels, often referred to capsule hotels, are generally more extreme in terms of size in Japan, where the minimum size can go down to two metres long by one metre across.
