The most effective way to stop bed mites from causing discomfort during sleep is to use pillow and mattress protectors, it is suggested.

'Bed bugs won't bite with mattress protector' A mattress cover is the single most effective measure to guard against dust mite allergens, one news provider reports.

By completely encasing the mattress with a micro-porous membrane, dust mites, their droppings and the human skin scales they live on cannot get through, but moisture can, explains the Pal Telegraph.

This helps to prevent allergies while still allowing a good night's sleep, the news provider continues.

It adds that those who receive benefits may be able to get a budgeting loan to buy a mattress protector.

To keep bed mites at bay, the newspaper also recommends washing all bedding in hot water and allowing the bed to air during the day by turning back the duvet.

Dust mites can cause rhinitis - the inflammation of the nose lining, characterised by itching, sneezing and congestion.

According to the British Society for Allergy & Clinical Immunology, allergic rhinitis affects one in four people in the UK.
