Criteria for insomnia diagnosis 'is improving'

Bad bedding may not be the only cause of a bad night's sleep, but with insomnia diagnosis improving it may soon become easier for people to find out whether they need new Egyptian bed linen.
The criteria by which insomnia can be diagnosed is improving, according to a leading sleep expert.Struggling to get to sleep or to stay in the land of nod while wrapped up in bedding may all be signs of insomnia, Associated Sleep Services fatigue management specialist Carolyn Schur told the Vancouver Sun.
In an interview with the newspaper, she also warned that many doctors are still not effective at diagnosing insomnia.
Ms Schur explained: "Often, though, fatigue and sleepiness can be confused with actual insomnia.
"They tend to deal with insomnia as though it was one entity."
Obstructive sleep apnea, which causes airways to be obstructed during sleep, can also cause fatigue and tiredness similar to that produced by insomnia.
Recent research published in the Journal of the American Heart Association underlined the importance of having this conditions diagnosed, with scientists finding a link to coronary heart disease in sufferers later in life.
