A new sleep apnoea treatment offers sufferers the best chance yet of a good night's sleep between the duvet set sheets, according to experts.
A new treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea promises to be more effective at securing sufferers a good night's sleep under their duvet set.Ventus Medical's Provent nose plugs restrict the airflow passing through the nasal cavity by preventing it from being exhaled.
This has the effect of forcing air to be diverted through the throat and other upper airways, putting pressure on the muscles in the lining of the throat to keep the airways open.
Research carried out by the scientists at St Luke's Hospital on the new technology found that 80 per cent of patients with sleep apnoea that had rejected the alternative treatment, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), had accepted the Provent product.
Commenting on the findings, the hospital's Dr James Walsh explained: "When used properly, CPAP essentially eliminates sleep apnoea, but a large percentage of patients are non-compliant and express significant dissatisfaction with CPAP."
