$1m bedding thrown out by unknowing daughter
Published: 12 June 2009
Sometimes it's necessary to throw out old bedding. Sometimes it really isn't, however, with one daughter stripping her mother's mattress of bed linen and throwing it away without realising there was $1 million inside it.
An old mattress is a cliched place to keep one's life savings, though one diligent mother did exactly that, only for her daughter to throw it out as part of a goodwill gesture. After stripping her mother's old bed of the bedspread and comforter, the woman disposed of the old mattress to replace it with a gift of a new, more comfortable one, without realising that $1 million (£700,000) was stashed away inside the old one.
Her mother's life savings were then carted away by bin men to one of three rubbish tip sites, which the shocked woman is still searching with the help of workers at each site.
So far, however, nothing has turned up, no doubt making it one of the worst bedding decisions in history.
At the moment, 'pillownauts' are subject to one of the best-sounding jobs with Nasa: getting paid £3,500 a month to lie on a bed for anti-gravity body tests, Popular Science reported this month.
