'Great fun had by all' at Knaresborough Bed Race
Published: 16 June 2009
The Knaresborough Bed Race has proven a success yet again, with all 86 teams decking their adapted transport in bed linen and comforters as they hurtled through the streets of the North Yorkshire town.
Organisers of the 44th Knaresborough Bed Race have announced that the race was, yet again, a huge success.Hundreds of people turned up for the annual charity event, which sees teams pushing beds around the town as well as executing a "spectacular" crossing of the River Nidd, with each one decked out in novelty bedding and duvet covers, the Yorkshire Post reported.
The traditional limit of 65 places was extended this year, with 86 beds racing following a peak in interest which resulted in 110 entries being lodged.
The Harrogate Harriers thoroughly dominated the competition, completing the course in an impressive 12 minutes and 59 seconds.
"Hopefully, if things work okay we may be able to increase the number yet again in future years, although we do feel we are reaching the extreme limit," said Richard Hall, who organised the event with the Knaresborough Lions.
The charity competition rose to prominence after Rory McGrath took part for a programme for Channel Five in 2008.
