Can Darling sleep easy on new bedding?
Published: 01 June 2009
Chancellor Alistair Darling charged his bed linen to the taxpayer in 2007 in a bid to get a good night's sleep.
Alistair Darling claimed £210 for bedding for his home, it has been revealed. The Chancellor however was also claiming allowances for a flat he let to tenants, the Daily Telegraph reports, in a breach of parliamentary rules.
According to the newspaper, he claimed £1,000 during autumn 2007, relating to the flat as his second home. The expenses included the bedding and £300 a month for food.
Mr Darling denied the allegation that he claimed for two houses at the same time, but admitted he claimed public money for the flat, including the bedding, when he was living at 11 Downing Street and promised to repay it.
MPs in Great Yarmouth and Waveney have also been ousted for claiming expenses for bed linen by the Great Yarmouth Mercury.
