Coming soon: bed linen for cars?
Published: 24 June 2009
In a huge technological development, it could transpire that people end up buying duvet covers, comforters and pillows for their cars, should Volvo scientists perfect their "car train" autopilot technology.
The idea of sleeping behind the wheel is one which strikes fear into the hearts of all drivers across the country, yet it may be acceptable behaviour in ten years, if the technology works out.Boffins at Volvo have discovered a way for sensors to be used on cars to allow one lead driver to take an entire line of cars to their destination, synchronising brakes, steering and acceleration.
This would help drivers to think about watching TV or even allow them to get under their bedding and have a snooze before arriving at their preferred location.
Commenting on the technology, Jonas Ekmark, a safety researcher at Volvo, said: "The professional driver leading the convoy will be responsible for the safety of those behind him.
"But those joining the convoy will be taking only the same sort of risks that those jumping on a bus or tube are taking."
There have been a number of rumours recently regarding the future of Volvo, with a Chinese automaker - Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co - considering investing in the now Ford-owned car firm.
