Gap year students 'don't even know duvet cover basics'
Published: 26 June 2009
One woman is leading a personal crusade against the seeming ignorance of 18-year-olds who go on gap years, explaining that it's not a great idea to head out to Bali or Laos without knowing the basics of putting a duvet cover on their comforter.
While many gap year students are happy to head out to the real world in search of an adventure, many are disappearing without any real experience of the basic necessities in life, it is said.Sharon Griffiths of the Northern Echo said that now exams are over and there is a very small chance of getting a holiday job in the meantime before university, many people are heading out to the likes of India, Laos and Bali.
And yet many parents don't teach their children the basics, instead leaving them to turn to the time-honoured microwave for warm food and brushing off the concept of putting a duvet cover on their bed, she continued.
Ms Griffiths explained that given the high rate of disaster, accident or even death on such trips, it makes sense that 18-year-olds become prepared for real life - even if it's just basic concepts such as bedding.
Her comments follow the announcement earlier in the month that Surrey Hills Cookery School in Leatherhead has had an overwhelming demand for its two-day course entitled How to Survive Uni Without Mum, which will set parents back by £175.
