The use of bed linen, duvet covers and bedspreads could be so much more creative for Britons in the recession, with one interior design expert noting that people are no longer moving house to get a new look - just updating their current home.

Home decor is 'becoming more creative' in recession Spending money on a current property is a safe investment during the recession and is making people think about their living space as opposed to a new one which they can decorate, it is believed.

Editor at Grand Designs Magazine Claire Barrett said that while people who read her magazine are still willing to spend anywhere between £30,000 and £150,000 on DIY, it is not on a new house but on their current living space.

She explained that many people are looking to add extensions to their home such as extra bedrooms, or simply changing the look of such areas, perhaps investing in high-quality bed linen such as that provided by Egyptian cotton sheets.

Commenting on the recession on a wider scale, Ms Barrett added: "In terms of design, it is a really exciting and important time because it forces people to think about things in a way that they wouldn't have before and the Brits are good at thinking creatively."

Grand Designs Magazine is the sister publication of the popular Channel 4 TV show, which is fronted by interior decor guru Kevin McCloud.
