Many people would not consider bedding as a major provider of cover from rocket-propelled grenades and launchers, yet the MoD has just given the go-ahead to mattresses capable of withstanding attacks from the Taliban.

Rocket-proof bedding given go-ahead by MoD It's safe to say that there has been a distinct lack of demand in the UK from consumers wanting bedding which can withstand rockets, yet the MoD has taken the technology to protect its troops.

The Times revealed that soldiers will be given the tough bedding as part of an extended defence initiative which leaves no stone - or mattress - unturned.

These oblong blocks of bendy proportions use advanced armour technology which can take the force of a Taliban rocket launcher in much the same way as the steel and aluminium alternatives currently being used by the armed forces.

Commenting on the development, Major Adrian Norton, a heavy logistics vehicle requirements manager, said: "It does look like a mattress but is obviously very different from a mattress. I think in time people will accept it."

Mattresses have been the focus of a number of strange news stories in recent months, with one woman accidentally disposing of her mother's old bed, which contained around £700,000 in savings.
