Address stress before getting under the duvet cover
Published: 30 June 2010
Those who suffer from stress need to sort out the day's problems before trying to sleep.
De-stressing is crucial before even attempting to sleep at night, an expert has suggested.Spokesperson for the Sleep Council Jessica Alexander said people should try doing something mundane such as counting sheep to switch off their brains.
"You might want to visualise either a nice place or an old routine you liked in the past, such as walking around your old school," she advised.
"Sleep therapists do encourage visualisations to help the mind relax."
People should try and learn these techniques early in life and adopt them whenever they feel anxiety, Ms Alexander recommended.
It is important to remember that each person is different, so what works for one individual may not be as effective for another, the expert added.
This follows findings from Travelodge's annual Sleep Professions study, which showed three-quarters of UK workers are getting under eight hours' sleep per night.
