New bedding 'can help asthma sufferers'
Published: 08 June 2010
Clean bedding can help reduce the problems affecting asthma sufferers, it has been claimed.
Choosing the right bedding can have a positive impact on child asthma sufferers, a new research project has determined.Lowering the amount of dust mites can help people with the condition sleep better at night, while also reducing their symptons, the David Hide Asthma and Allergy Research Centre discovered.
Dr Martha Scott, one of the study authors, said: "It is possible to prevent the onset of asthma in high-risk individuals by instituting a strict regime that avoids some of the common triggers for asthma in the first year of life."
A total of 58 babies slept on vinyl mattresses for the experiments, with the bedding then sprayed with acracide to get rid of the dust mites.
The asthma symptoms of this group were found to be less severe than those who had no change of bedding.
It was revealed earlier this week by SRI International that children who have regular sleep patterns are often better at learning maths and literacy than those who do not.
