Study: Migraines reduced after good night's sleep
Published: 24 June 2010
Migraine sufferers need to make sure they have deep REM sleep to help reduce symptoms.
Deep REM sleep is crucial for those who suffer from chronic migraines, researchers at Missouri State University's Center for Biomedical & Life Sciences have found. They determined a link between a great night's sleep and the presence of migraines, pointing out that failing to rest can make symptoms worse, or even trigger them.
Leader of the study Dr Paul Dunham said: "We found that REM sleep deprivation caused increased expression of the proteins p38, PKA, and P2X3, which are known to play an important role in initiating and sustaining chronic pain."
He noted that previous clinical research had pinpointed a connection between migraines and sleep, but these latest findings gave further support to the idea.
Delegates of the 52nd annual scientific meeting of the American Headache Society were presented with the research earlier this week.
A link was recently established between sleep disruption and increasing levels of air pollution during the summer months.
