Study: Sleep affected by air pollution
Published: 17 June 2010
Air pollution can have a negative impact on people's sleep, research shows.
High levels of air pollution can negatively impact people's ability to sleep, new findings from the Harvard School of Public Health and Brigham & Women's Hospital show.Throughout the summer, the scientists found that sleep apnoea worsens, as do the levels of pollution in the air.
Study co-author Antonella Zanobetti said: "These new data suggest that reduction in air pollution exposure might decrease the severity of such sleep disruptions."
The study of more than 3,000 people did not manage to find how the mechanism works in reaction to pollutants in the air, so further research will be needed.
It was recently said by Shelly Weiss of Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children that the summer months can often lead to disruption when it comes to children's sleep patterns, mainly because they are keen to stay outside for longer.
She added that meal times should be kept to as normal a pattern as possible to avoid too much impact on sleep.
