Bedding is 'reason behind major football kit'
Published: 09 March 2009
Bedding and other sleeping materials have been responsible for a lot over the years, but one famous Spanish football team is understood to take their kit from the use of colours in the bedroom back in the early 1900s.
The iconic red and white stripes of a popular Spanish club have been attributed to their use in bedding, showing the power of bedroom materials in popular culture.According to Goal.com, when discussing the derby between the Spanish capital's two major teams, it was noted that the use of the colours by Atletico Madrid is widely believed to go back to the production of mattresses.
It continued: "Mattresses in Spain were made using red and white striped cloth and the excess fabric made for a cheap resource in weaving shirts."
Goal.com added that before Athletic Bilbao also took the colour scheme, "the Madrid club became colloquially known as los colchoneros - the mattress makers".
In front of 80,000 fans at the Bernabeu, the weekend's derby between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid finished 1-1.
