Comfortable bed linen and pillows are vital for tranquil sleep, David Schulman, medical director of the Emory Clinic Sleep Disorders Lab tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Things such as memory foam pillows and memory foam mattresses could also aid a decent snooze.

Mr Schulman adds that the bedtime routine and sleep schedule should be regular and routine, and the bedroom kept dark, cool and quiet.

He also suggests that if you lie in bed for more than 30 minutes and cannot get to sleep, then get up and do something else for a while before trying again.

Earlier this week, columnist Heloise advised people to do away with messy bed linen to ensure their bedroom remains a place to relax and unwind.

She suggested that bed spreads and duvet sets should always be made up as this will help the rook look tidier.
