Bedding 'must be top quality'
Published: 12 March 2010
Sometimes, people simply have to buy a new bed for the good of their own health, as sagging bed frames and poor mattresses can lead to all kind of problems.
The Daily Mirror's veteran health specialist has revealed that people need to take more pride in their bed, as people spend a third of their lives in it and contributes massively to a person's wellbeing.Dr Miriam Stoppard explained that people shouldn't wash their bed linen for the simple joy of "slipping between crisp, newly-washed sheets" - there are wider benefits for doing it.
She continued: "When I worked in an allergy clinic I became aware of how much of a health hazard dirty beds can be.
"A bed can harbour anywhere between 100,000 and 10 million dust mites - microscopic creatures that feed off dead skin shed from our bodies."
She explained that these critters and their droppings can result in allergies, including asthma, eczema and rhinitis, underlining that cleaning comforters, duvet covers and other bedding is more important than ever.
It follows the revelation from Stuart Broad, the England cricket team's fast bowler, that beds in their stopover destination of Chittagong have been awful on the team's wellbeing, possibly causing problems due to the firmness of the mattresses.
