Bedroom is 'top priority' for elderly people

When customising a living space for an elderly person, the bedroom must be the main focus, with bedding and comforters needing to be customised to their needs, though safety must also be considered.
People designing homes for elderly relatives or friends must take their needs into account, according to an interior designer, with the bedroom being the focal point of their independence.Melissa Brunk of the Denver Examiner said elderly people take more pride in maintaining their regular lifestyle, as independence is above safety as a priority.
As the bedroom reflects the personality of the older person, she said the bed must be easy to access yet must reflect their style, with bed linen and comforters taking precedence and photographs, ornaments and other special items complementing this.
Ms Brunk also recommended that pathways around the room must also be kept clear to avoid any accidents or problems.
Jie Pambid, the director of the Philippine School of Interior Design, said this week that bed linen is always personal to the bedroom's owner, also marking this facet as a top priority.
