Ministers love their bed linen - at public's expense
Published: 14 May 2009
Being an MP can be a tough job, with many no doubt looking forward to hitting the sack at the end of the day. Some have even bought beautiful bed linen and duvet covers to ease their pain, although some may have done so at the taxpayer's expense!
In their quest to sleep easier at night, MPs around Britain have been lavishly spending on top-of-the-range bed linen to help themselves feel more comfortable on an evening. It's just such a shame that many have claimed such purchases on their expenses, with several leading politicians named on the list recently made public by the Daily Telegraph.
Sir Menzies Campbell, the former leader of the Liberal Democrats, made his bedroom much more comfortable with a king-size bed worth over £1,000, while the bed linen alone came to a whopping £373 - showing that his priorities are to be as comfortable as possible, albeit from public donations.
His laundry bill also totalled £1,718 for the last four years, with parking setting him - or us - back £4,700, despite free spaces being available under the Commons.
In related news, House of Commons speaker Michael Martin may face a vote of no confidence from MPs following his actions in the last few days, speaking out to prevent the MP expenses information from being leaked to the press.
