Asthma suffers urged to replace bed linen in May
Published: 11 May 2010
Asthma suffers and other people with allergies have been encouraged to get rid of their old and worn bed linen this month to avoid succumbing to dust mites and the rising pollen count.
Changing bed linen in May is the best way for allergy suffers and those with asthma to avoid dust mites and the high pollen count. The rising pollen count, which asthma sufferers are often sensitive to, is compounded by the potential allergic impact of dust mites living in the bed spread and mattress, according to the Sleep Council.
Dust mites often favour the bedroom because of the abundance of dead skin cells, but their faeces also cause allergic reactions in some humans, with the council urging Brits to change their bed linen to reduce the this combined threat.
Ian Burgess, director of insect research and development at the Sleep Council, said: "A high pollen count is often just an added irritation which compounds the problem initially inflicted by the allergic faeces of the house dust mite.
"If you can get rid of the mite problem, for asthma sufferers at least, you can sometimes dramatically reduce the effects of a high pollen count."
Earlier this week, the Sleep Council's Jessica Alexander suggested that poor sleep, perhaps caused by hay fever, can have a significant impact on long-term mental and physical wellbeing.
