Bed time is learning time for newborns
Published: 19 May 2010
Sleep is perhaps more important than first thought for newborn babies, a new study has indicated.
Infants need plenty of time tucked up in their kids' bedding, as sleep helps them process information, the results of a study show.According to researchers at the University of Florida (UF), newborns are much more effective at taking in information when they are asleep than adults.
The scientists believe it is the plasticity of children's brains that makes them more able to compute information and digest it while they are asleep.
Dana Byrd, a research affiliate in psychology at UF, commented: "While past studies find this type of learning can occur in infants who are awake, this is the first study to document it in their most frequent state, while they are asleep."
She said that the results indicate that sleep is a more amenable state for learning than being awake for infants.
Adults were recently warned against going to sleep with the TV on, as the Science Translational Medicine journal revealed it can disrupt the body clock.
