Quality of sleep in kids bedding 'key to emotional development'
Published: 14 May 2010
Ensuring children get a good night's sleep under their kids bedding is key to their emotional development, according to new research.
Children from poorer families that got less sleep are more aggressive and exhibit greater incidence of depression and low-self esteem, a study by the Society for Research in Child Development has found.Poorer children were also found to be more vulnerable to the effects of sleep deprivation than their peers by researchers at Auburn University, who published their findings in the journal Child Development.
This suggests that ensuring the quality of a child's bed spread and general sleeping environment could be key to their behaviour.
Commenting on the findings, Auburn University professor and lead study author Mona El-Sheikh said: "The significance of children's sleep to their development is receiving increased attention.
"Our findings can inform intervention programs as well as parent education programmes. Programmes that are tailored to families' resources and challenges are likely to be more effective."
Last week, the Sleep Council indicated that getting a poor night's rest in bedding can have a direct impact on the emotional and physical wellbeing of adults.
