Bedding's worst enemy looks like it is setting up shop in the Canadian city of Toronto, with bed bugs infesting bed linen and comforters all over the city, it has been reported.

Media outlets from around the country have revealed that the number of incidents involving bed bugs that have been reported by citizens has risen by a whopping 1,000 per cent in 2008 - with one and a half months still to go.

Authorities said that last year, 144 calls were made about the bedding behemoth but this year nearly 1,500 cases have already been reported.

Resources from the Toronto Board of Health to the tune of $75,000 (£40,610) have been made available to people hoping get rid of the pests from their beloved bed linen, even though the powerful pesticide traditionally used to treat the insect has been banned by Ontario.

To rid a bed of the near-invisible threat, people were told by Kentucky.com to inspect mattresses and bedding to ensure bed bugs had not taken over the bed, adding that bed linen seams were also popular targets.
