£3 jab 'could cure snoring'
Published: 16 November 2009
A short-term snoring cure has been put together by the NHS and looks to help people and their partners get the most out of their bed linen and memory foam mattresses every night for a year.
A £3 needle jab into a snorer's mouth could be all that is needed to avoid expensive and potentially painful surgery to prevent noisy sleep, it has been revealed. The so-called "snoreplasty" could be a solution in just two minutes and may halt snoring for up to a year, with a needle injecting chemicals to the back of the mouth, burning the soft tissue which causes vibrations - done with local anaesthetic, of course.
Dr Hadi Al-Jassim from Southport & Ormskirk Hospital in Merseyside, who is pioneering the technology, said that while the procedure is not hugely great to have, it can allow individuals to have the best shot at a good night's sleep tucked up under their bedding.
He added that it proves to be better than ineffective over-the-counter medicines while also proving to be less intense or off-putting than major surgical procedures.
Founded in 1991, the British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Association is the non-profit organisation which commits to raising the profile and awareness of sufferers of snoring in the UK.
