Night jobs and coffee 'don't mix'
Published: 05 November 2009
People wanting to get the most from their organic cotton bed linen or memory foam mattress after a night shift will likely get a lot more out of their sleep if they avoid coffee, it is asserted.
Drinking coffee is something night-time workers ought to avoid, according to a new study revealed in this month's journal Sleep Medicine.Psychology professor at the University of Montreal Julie Carrier, who also works as a researcher at the Hopital du Sacre-Coeur Sleep Disorders Centre, revealed that the caffeine in coffee will always interfere with rest for night shift workers and this only stands to get worse over time.
And while many people reckon they are getting a great rest beneath the bed linen soon after having an espresso or strong coffee, they are not right to assume this, as Ms Carrier asserts they are simply not getting a deep sleep.
"Caffeine is the most widely used stimulant to counteract sleepiness, yet it has detrimental effects on the sleep of night shift workers who must slumber during the day, just as their biological clock sends a strong wake-up signal," she added.
As people get older, the number of sleep disturbances a night does drop, so long as they have retired, according to a recent study by the University of Turku in Finland.
