American space-racer Nasa has been heralded on its 50th birthday for its boffins and their sterling work for the furthering of mankind - not least for their invention of memory foam, helping bedding lovers get a good night's sleep for years.
The great innovations of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration - or Nasa - have been revealed.Celebrating its 50th anniversary this week, the government body was applauded by a national newspaper for satellite television, artificial limbs, landmine removal and, for those who love bed linen and all things sleep related, memory foam - a material now used in beds.
The Sun said: "Nasa developed a soft, high-energy-absorbent padding to improve crash protection in aircraft.
"Now memory foam is used in mattresses, pillows, military and civilian vehicles, sports safety equipment, amusement park rides, furniture and artificial limbs."
Yesterday, Forbes noted that the smoke detector was also attributed to Nasa inventors, who used it on Skylab, the first US space station.
