People must be 'extra careful' with silk
Published: 28 October 2008
Bed linen fans who invest in silk bedding must be careful when maintaining their beloved quilting as the fabric should not be put in the wash or face dry-cleaning.
Tips have been offered to those hoping to avoid a catastrophe when cleaning their beloved bed linen made of silk. Given the expensive and high-quality nature of silk products, bedding expert Stephanie Zia said that the best silk products were made using silkworms fed with mulberry leaves, which produced strong and durable fillings.
However, she noted that silk duvets should never be washed in their entirety or dry-cleaned, especially if they are of slightly cheaper quality.
Ms Zia told the Guardian: "They are naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, and normally all you need to do is hang them out in warm, not hot, sunlight for an hour or so several times a year."
Bedding boffins Silksleep said that silk bedding and duvets allowed heat to pass through it as a person slept yet holding some inside, regulating body temperature naturally.
