'Safety first' with baby's sleep
Published: 20 October 2009
Newborn babies and their sleeping habits are regularly under the microscope, though many parents need to take feeding times into account when addressing the issue.
The need for younger babies to have sleep is one that's never going to be disputed, though many may drop off into the land of nod for longer than is good for their health, according to a new report.HealthDay News revealed that if young ones haven't had something to eat for five hours and they are still asleep, they ought to be woken up if their development is to be as healthy as possible.
Plush bedding in a crib or cot is also a huge no-no, while pillows should be avoided completely, it added, as these factors dramatically increase the chance of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Stuffed animals should also be done away with when the baby is asleep, it was added.
The comments from HealthDay News follow research from Bristol University, which recently discovered that babies who share a bed with their parents are more likely to fall victim to SIDS.
