Bedding becomes lifesaver for mother-to-be

Bedding came to the rescue for one woman trapped in her apartment, which was ablaze and provided her with no other route of escape other than through a window onto a mattress.

Bedding becomes lifesaver for mother-to-be An inferno in a Toronto apartment saw one very lucky pregnant woman get a second chance after quick-thinking from neighbours saw bedding being harnessed for her escape.

The 21-year-old unnamed dame screamed for help as flames engulfed her home, though she was able to get the attention of those who also cleared the apartment in response to the wails of the fire alarm, according to CTV Toronto.

Yet bedding - in the form of a mattress or two - was enough to get her out of the window, ensuring her baby remained healthy while the woman only suffered with a broken leg, which was quickly and effectively treated at a nearby hospital.

Toronto fire platoon chief Robin Sanders said it showed the true community spirit of the area.

He told the news agency: "They're people who are willing to get out to do that. They said, 'If we didn't have the mattresses, we were prepared to break her fall with our bodies,' so good for them."

Recently, however, mothers were warned not to share their bed with young ones after a study from Bristol University discovered that bed-sharing with babies leads to nearly half of all instances of cot death.
