Bedding-themed song released to underline climate issues
Published: 12 October 2009
Bedding won't literally be burned for a new initiative to highlight the problems Earth faces in terms of climate change, though the metaphor will hopefully be powerful enough to raise awareness among singers and politicians.
Climate change will be underlined in a re-recording of a Midnight Oil classic, factoring bedding into the equation as a powerful metaphor for our changing planet. The 1987 worldwide hit Beds are Burning has been released as a free download, with singers including Lily Allen, Jamie Cullum, Duran Duran, Bob Geldof and Mark Ronson getting in on the action.
Lyrics make the message clear, highlighting how many people may be standing by and watching the world change beyond recognition: "How can we dance when our world is turning? How can we sleep when the beds are burning?"
Kofi Annan, the head of the Global Humanitarian Forum and the former UN Secretary-General, is backing the campaign along with a number of other top politicians.
Peter Garrett, the lead singer of Midnight Oil, is not taking part in the tune, though has continued his efforts of highlighting issues facing the world at large in his work as the minister of environment, entertainment and the arts in Australia, holding his position since 2007.
