Don't get too comfortable with bedding, say scientists
Published: 30 October 2009
Staying in bed for long periods of time due to one condition or another can lead to muscle weakness, meaning people shouldn't get too attached to Egyptian cotton bedding despite its comfort.
Bedding can be a luxury purchase that can have many people wanting to stay in bed all day, every day. Still, these individuals may want to heed the advice of a recent American study. That's because scientists have recently focused on the effects of long-term bed use, such as when people are in intensive care units.
Robert D. Stevens, a Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine associate professor of anaesthesiology, asserted that patients who develop muscle weakness from extended periods of time with their bed linen can take longer to bounce back in their recovery stages.
"They have higher mortality, their stay in the ICU is prolonged, their stay in the hospital is prolonged," he continued. "They incur serious costs.
"Some of these patients in the long run remain weak and are unable to resume physical activities as before."
For pregnant women, the Cleveland Clinic highlights that muscle weakness can also affect them after giving birth and thus recommends the use of therapists specialising in physical and massage abilities to minimise their side-effects.
