Internet and bedding 'may not be a great mix' for kids
Published: 07 October 2009
A lot more children than may be expected are using the internet in their bedroom, whether on their bedding or not, in an unsupervised environment, according to a watchdog.
A large number of children are using the internet from the comfort of their bedroom, raising some key concerns, according to a new poll. This week, Ofcom released the UK Children's Media Literacy interim report which detailed how just over a third of 12 to 15-year-olds have web access from the comfort of their own bed linen, with 60 per cent able to use it without adult supervision.
While many may be affecting their sleep, a quarter of them could also be putting financial details of parents and themselves at risk as they are not aware of basic security checks, such as the padlock logo.
Even more surprising is that one in six eight to 11-year-olds have the internet a stone's throw from where they are bedding down for the night, while one in five 5-7s says they use the online world without an adult to keep an eye on things.
Ofcom officially regulates the internet and all other communications as per the Communications Act 2003.
