Tory opposition to bedding habits
Published: 27 October 2009
The Conservative Party has opposed the government's decision to include bedding habits of people across the UK in its latest census proposals, which want to know how many people are embracing bed linen in every home.
The government has annoyed the Tories yet again, and this time it's all about bedding and how many people embrace it. Describing the issue as an invasion of privacy, the opposition believes the "bedroom snooping" idea - which will ask for the number of bedrooms in a person's house, alongside the number of people sleeping in them and the number of overnight visitors to each abode - is completely unnecessary.
Nick Hurd, the shadow cabinet office minister, complained that it added to an "increasingly invasive and intrusive" census which will "erode public support", cost more to operate and make surveys less accurate.
He opined: "These 'bedroom snoopers' are yet another sign of how the Labour government has no respect for the privacy of law-abiding citizens."
Ministers, however, believe all questions in the survey will be in the public's interest.
Jedi was officially introduced as a religion in the last census in 2001, after a strong campaign in newspapers and the internet saw nearly 400,000 people claim to be a member of the Star Wars discipline.
